2014 Commencement Speakers

Many thanks to all of our impressive seniors who auditioned to be a speaker at graduation. For more than forty years Nipmuc's commencement exercises have included four senior speakers. The senior class president acts as the emcee for the event and offers an opening message. Members of the senior class have the chance to audition to deliver three other speeches including comments about the class motto, offering a class farewell, and providing a class reflection.

Senior Class President Emily Wojtowicz will act as this year's master of ceremonies. The seniors who will be joining Emily at graduation are Robert Aziz, Laura Ng, and Melanie Kossuth.

This year's auditions were some of the most impressive in recent memory. All of our speakers would have done a phenomenal job at graduation. It was challenging to choose only three during the auditions.

Thank you to Mr. Michael Clements for organizing the auditions and working with our speeches, and thank you to the judges who helped to make this tough decision.

Student Feature Friday: Junior Olympian Tyler Lefebvre

Junior Olympian Tyler Lefebvre receiving
a medal at the Bay State games in 2013.
As the vacation week begins, many of our students are getting ready for a bit of rest and relaxation as they gear up for the final weeks of the school year. One student, however, will be foregoing a week of leisure in order to put his skills to the test at the Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs. Nipmuc junior Tyler Lefebvre has established himself as one of the most talented air rifle competitors in the country. Over the course of the summer Tyler competed in the Bay State Games, earning a gold medal and a state championship in smallbore rifle. On April 20 he will be traveling to Colorado, hoping to extend his accomplishments to the national level. I had the chance to ask Tyler some questions about his outstanding achievements and his path to success.

How did you get started competing in Men’s Air Rifle?
I got started in rifle shooting from a friend of mine back in freshman year.  He shot at a local club and I thought it would be interesting to try out.  I shoot both air rifle which is 60 shots standing at 10 meters as well as smallbore rifle (.22)  which is shot at 50 feet, 50 yards, 50 meters and 100 feet.  Smallbore is shot in 3P (3 position) or all prone.  Three position is either a 3x20 or 3x40 which is 20 or 40 shots prone, 20 or 40 shots standing and 20 or 40 shots kneeling respectively.

How often do you train? What type of training activities do you participate in?
I train three times a week at the range, Monday and Wednesdays at Taunton and Thursdays at Niantic in Connecticut.  I also train at home in my basement one day a week.

On April 20 you will be competing in the Junior Olympics. Tell me about your road to that competition. What were some of the successes that you’ve had along the way?
Shooting in the Junior Olympics has been a goal of mine since I found out about them in 2012.  Between then and now I have competed in the Bay State Games twice, medaling in both.  In 2012 my first season shooting I got silver in smallbore and bronze in air.  In the 2013 season two other teammates and I competed in numerous regional and sectional competitions winning first in all of them.  I also placed first in my age group for all of those matches as well.  In the summer of 2013 I once again shot in the Bay State Games and got gold in smallbore and bronze with air. (I would have double gold but my rifle broke in air rifle).  Later in the summer my team and I shot the NRA National Matches at Camp Perry in Ohio where we shot against the best juniors and adults in the country in smallbore, and we set two national records. I also placed 4th in a duo match with a teammate.  In January of 2014 I shot the JORQ (Junior Olympic Regional Qualifier) and placed 2nd in air only being 1 point off of my teammate who got gold and bronze in smallbore.  Later that month my team and I went to Camp Perry, Ohio again but this time for an open air rifle event where we placed 3rd place overall and 2nd place junior team. “Open” means adults compete in the match as well.

What do you enjoy most about competing?
I like this sport because I get the chance to travel around the country and meet people that share the same interests with me.   It is an individual team sport.  It is an individual sport because nothing any other shooter does directly affects how you shoot, but it is also a team sport because teammates are very important in team matches and training as we push each other to do better.  This is a sport where you get out what you put into it; you don’t rely on teammates to make the pass like in football or lacrosse.

Will you continue to compete in Men’s Air Rifle after high school? If yes, how will you continue to pursue this interest?
I plan on shooting on a Division 1 team in college and studying petroleum and natural gas engineering.

---

Good luck, Tyler. We'll be rooting for you as you compete this week in Colorado!

Standing Ovations for "Once on This Island"

Congratulations to the members of Nipmuc Drama for three outstanding performances of the spring musical, "Once on This Island". Directed by Mr. Nick LaPete and Musical Director Ann Marie Tremblay, the musical told the tale of a peasant girl, Ti Moune (played by Samantha Brower), who falls in love with a young aristocrat (played by Jesse Charpentier). The story focuses on the struggles faced by Ti Moune as she pursues the relationship despite the tampering of the four gods on the island played by Arianna Bonito, Meghan Clark, Jay Turner, and Matthew O'Brien.

The play featured standout performances from the entire cast. The singing, choreography, acting, and sets were an outstanding tribute to the hard work of the cast, crew, and directors.

Bravo!

Included below is the program from the play including the full cast and crew (cover designed by Senior Rose Wiklund), comments from senior members of Nipmuc Drama, and our many generous sponsors.

Celebrating National Library Week

In honor of National Library Week I am happy to offer my thanks to Nipmuc's Library Media Specialist, Ms. Suzanne Venkataraman, and our Library Media Assistant, Ms. Sue Roecker. Ms. Venkataraman and Ms. Roecker help to make our media center an integral part of teaching and learning at Nipmuc. The library is also a key aspect of the school culture at Nipmuc.

Each quarter at Nipmuc the media center accommodates approximately 6,000 student visits. Approximately 3,000 students visit with classes to make use of resources or technology. Additionally, nearly 600 students each quarter access the library after school. Clearly these stats demonstrate the important role the media center plays for our school.

Many thanks to Ms. Venkataraman and Ms. Roecker for all of their work and initiative, including updating the media center website, helping to provide access to iPads, and ensuring that our NHS tutors can work with students after school.

Feature Friday: Student Government Day Representatives Patrick Carey and Lindsay Doyle

Thank you Patrick, Lindsay and Mr. Kevin Connors
for representing us so well at this event.

Over the course of a student's four years at Nipmuc, there are many different opportunities to participate in student leadership. Our school is fortunate to benefit from a strong tradition of student leadership including elected officers, student council, elected boards for clubs and activities, and captains of our athletic teams. This week, I am excited to celebrate the leadership demonstrated by two of our junior students - Patrick Carey and Lindsay Doyle. One week ago Patrick and Lindsay traveled with history teacher Kevin Connors to the State House in Boston to represent Nipmuc for Student Government Day. Student Government Day is an annual event that allows high school students to work with our elected officials, participate in the process of debating and passing a bill, and experience first-hand the type of work undertaken by our state congressmen and senators. Patrick and Lindsay answered a few questions about this awesome experience and how it impacted them.

Lindsay Doyle:
How did you become interested in Student Government Day?  Over the past few years I have been actively involved with many of Nipmuc's student government programs and love to get involved around the school. I am always looking for opportunities to expand my leadership skills and this was the perfect opportunity. Not only was I going to further my understanding of leadership and student government, but also be exposed to how our government works and how to voice my own opinion within the community and state.
What was the most memorable part of Student Government Day?  The most memorable part of Student Government Day was probably sitting in the House Chambers. Each student that participated in student government day was appointed a senate or house representative position and was split up into the senate and house chambers respectively after the mock public hearing. I was Representative Carl Sciortino. As Rep. Sciortino I was directed to his desk in the House Chambers. Being at his actual desk, discussing and voting on actual bills was by far one of the best experiences of the day.

What part of the experience taught you most about the way our state government works?  The whole day was full of experiences which taught me about the way our state government works, there is not one part that stands out more than another. Being able to understand how government works on both the public and rep. level by participating in mock hearings and voting sessions was the best learning experience. Going into this, I didn't know how much of our state government worked, so having a hands-on experience was amazing. Hearing students from all around the state voice their opinions on real life problems, such as cell phone usage in motor vehicles and mandatory physical education in schools k-12, was life changing. The mock sessions being held were almost a glimpse into the future, you could see the future of the state government and all the students who would make a difference all in one room. By hearing other students speak I was able to understand that voicing my opinion isn't bothersome to others, but a way to benefit the world around me. Student Government Day as a whole drastically furthered my understanding of our state government.

Patrick Carey:
What was the most memorable part of Student Government Day?   What part of the experience taught you most about governmental leadership?  I believe the most memorable part of Student Government Day for me was hearing how well articulated both sides of the debates were. The House debated two bills which both affected kids and it was incredible to see how insightful and intelligent the arguments were from both sides. This ties into the what the day taught me about student government. The process of debating and passing a resolution on just two bills took us more than 2 hours. Considering that this process was expedited to ensure that we did not run late, which we did anyways, it is incredible to imagine how people do this on a daily basis. Ensuring that everyone has a voice is a noble cause but it certainly does not make for quick decisions. This was the most interesting thing to me, seeing democracy in action and participating in it, made for an incredible experience.

How did you become interested in Student Government Day?   My first involvement with civics came when I was appointed to Senator Moore's Youth Advisory Council. I met Senator Moore at a business expo and had a conversation with him about how he first became involved in politics, he then informed me of the council he was forming and said that I would be a great candidate and I should apply. I fell in love with civics after being but on the council and participating in the meetings. The group consists of students from schools across Senator Moore's district and we meet to discuss bills that affect teens. Most kids wouldn't find giving up 4 hours on a Saturday to talk about policy fun but it's something I look forward to at every meeting. From the council it made sense that I would apply for student government day.

Good Reads for Good Deeds

Seniors Annalisa Baci (StuCo VP), Emily Pirozzi (StuCo President)
Wally Esker, and Taylor Olson read with students.

Kudos to the Nipmuc Student Council members who launched a community service project last week called “Good Reads for Good Deeds”. As part of the project Nipmuc students work with students at our elementary schools to collect new and gently used books which will be donated to hospitals, shelters, police and fire stations to benefit children in need. In receiving donations, student council members had the chance to speak to our elementary students about the virtues of helping others. They also read some of the donated books to the students.

Thank you to our student council members and their advisers - Mrs. Janis Grady and Ms. Ana Soto - for organizing this event. Thank you, also, to the students, parents, teachers, and administrators at our elementary schools for partnering with us in running this collaborative effort.

Student Feature Friday: Boston Children's Chorus Member Ateha Bailly

All across the country runners are in the process of training and conditioning in preparation for the 118th running of the Boston Marathon. For all of us in the Commonwealth, the marathon is a treasured event; however, this year the marathon will not only represent the tireless will of the runners and competitors, but also the strength, resilience, and unity of our community. The past 354 days have demonstrated what it means to be "Boston Strong".

In this Friday's post I'm proud to share the talents and accomplishments of a young man who contributed to the healing of our communities and whose great vocal talents are a source of pride for our school. Ateha Bailly is a junior at Nipmuc and a member of the Boston Children's Chorus. One year ago when the nation turned its eyes and hearts to President Obama and our local leaders at a memorial service to commemorate the marathon tragedy, Ateha was part of the chorus that performed at the event. In just a few weeks he will once again be part of the chorus when it performs at a ceremony to mark the one year anniversary of the tragedy.

In pursuing his love of music Ateha has traveled to different countries, experienced a variety of cultures, developed his vocal abilities, and entertained audiences from the stage at Nipmuc to the world stage.

I had the chance to ask Ateha a few questions about his experience with the Boston Children's Chorus and his interest in music.

When did you get involved with the Boston Children's Chorus?
I began singing when I joined the Boston Children's Chorus in 2007.

Tell me about the experience of singing with the chorus.
Singing in the Boston Children's Chorus has given me experiences far beyond music.  These experiences exposed me to all types of art, including dance, theatre, and acting.  By performing with professional dancers and actors, I have had the chance to be taught and coached by experts in the arts as well as celebrities.  The chorus has even provided speaking coaches to help singers with public speaking and solos for performances at corporate events. While moving through various levels of the chorus, I have met young people that I would not typically have met from different parts of Greater Boston, Massachusetts, the country, and even the world.

How often do you rehearse with the group?
I rehearse with the group twice a week, every Wednesday and Thursday in Boston from 5-7pm (with additional rehearsals as needed for special performances).

What are some of your most memorable experiences from being part of the Boston Children's Chorus?
My most memorable experiences of the Boston Children's Chorus are participating in two international tours. I had the opportunity to go to the United Kingdom (Scotland and England) in 2011 and Vietnam and Cambodia in 2013.  During each tour, I stayed in the homes of local families and learned about the culture of the area.

Can you tell me about the event that you will be singing at to commemorate the marathon?
On April 15th, I will sing at the one-year commemoration of the Boston Marathon bombings.  Last year I sang with the Chorus at the interfaith memorial service held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston.  This year, the memorial service and Chorus performance will be held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston at noon.
.
Do you have plans to continue with music after high school?

Yes, I hope to continue with music well beyond my high school years.

Congratulations Ateha on your amazing experiences and talent.

Included below is a video clip of the emotional performance from the Boston Children's Chorus at the interfaith memorial service from last April. Ateha can be clearly seen at 1:14 on the upper left of the chorus.
