Student Feature Friday: High Flyer JR Bravo

JR Bravo getting ready for his first flight.
In each of my Feature Friday posts, I have the opportunity to highlight students whose accomplishments distinguish them from their peers in some exceptional way. Today's featured student has literally risen above his fellow Nipmuc students. Junior JR Bravo is a young man with many interests - from getting certified as a ski patrolman to spending his quiet summer days on a fishing boat; however, it is JR's interest and passion for flying that has charted his course for the future. JR has begun the process of becoming a licensed pilot. I spent some time with him this week to learn about his interest in flying and what it feels like to be in control of a plane.

Q: How did you become interested in flying?
A: When I was younger I had the chance to fly in a plane. I thought it was exciting so about ten years ago my parents bought me a flight simulator game and it has become one of my favorite things to do. I can fly while still enjoying the comforts of home.

Q: What was your first experience flying your own plane?
A: Over the summer of 2014 I took my introductory flight. When I finally went up there and realized how free and how great it was to be flying, I realized that this is what I am meant to do for a living. It's my calling.

Q: What does it feel like when you are flying?
A: Like nothing can stop you. You look down at the world from five or six thousand feet and think, "Wow - My problems are down there, my life is down there...up here I'm free." There's nothing like it.

Q: What's your most memorable moment from when you were flying?
A: My most memorable moment from flying was getting off the ground for the first time. You get that roller coaster feeling...you literally feel yourself lift up. However, in a small plane you feel yourself lift up even that much faster. It felt like a roller coaster but then then you remember that the feeling is actually you flying your own plane. When I lifted off the ground I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Being in a smaller plane is not the same as being in a regular airliner. You can see everything. I could see the ocean. I could see Mt. Washington. I was really high up and it felt great.

Q: What are your future plans for flying?
A: I really want to be a corporate pilot. When you're a corporate pilot you have a little more freedom than when you're a commercial pilot.

Thank you for the interview, JR. We know you'll continue to be a high-flyer!

Guest Technology Blogger: Senior Ashley Whitmore

I am excited to begin a guest blogger feature on my Principal's Blog, giving students the chance to speak about their experiences at Nipmuc. With our Community iFair scheduled to take place tomorrow, 3/26 from 5:45pm - 8pm at Nipmuc, my first guest blogger will be discussing the impact of 1:1 learning. Ashley Whitmore is a senior at Nipmuc and a member of the STEM Scholars Program. She will be presenting on Virtual High School at tomorrow's Community iFair. In the post below she discusses some of the impacts of 1:1 learning on Nipmuc's student body.

Being a senior, this is my first and only year being a part of the 1:1 initiative. That being said, I can still see some effects it has had on the students, teachers, and school in general. One of my favorite things about this 1:1 initiative is how creative I can be. In the past we were limited to what we can do with a pencil, paper and maybe some tape, and I’m not exactly the best at drawing so you can see how well that worked. Where we once had to do poster boards or papers, we can now make presentations using a PowerPoint (and not have to go to the media center, which is always crammed) or make videos using iMovie. The possibilities are endless. And now we can just email everything to our teachers which makes everyone’s lives a little easier and bags a little lighter.

On the topic of lighter backpacks, the iPads have eliminated some rather heavy textbooks and a lot of paper from our bags. I’ve always had to carry around at least two or more textbooks, not the case this year though. Since most of my textbooks are online I only carry one textbook, which eliminates a lot of weight from my bag. I also had to go through my bag at least twice a term and clean out a lot of the papers that I was done with so I could have space for everything and be able to lift my bag without hurting myself. Now, much to my back’s enjoyment, I don’t have that problem. Plus, if I accidentally drop my bag on someone’s foot, which happens more than you would think, I’m probably not going to break their toes.

Probably the biggest perk I’ve found is the organization factor that comes along with the 1:1 initiative and the iPads. I have all of my papers on one device, all my notebooks, and a lot of my handouts. A lot of people, myself included, used to only pack their bags for the classes they had that day. That’s all fine and dandy if you’re never wrong when it comes to figuring out what academic day it is. Most people forget what academic day it is at least once, and that one day is always the day you need whatever you forgot the most. This problem is eliminated with the iPads.

Now us kids aren’t the only ones enjoying the technology upgrade; the teachers are as well. A lot of my teachers now use their iPads to grade tests a lot faster using an app, which saves teachers time and helps students figure out what they may need to correct right then and there. Also, some of my science teachers have found games or 3D representations of things that may be hard to grasp in a 2D form, such as a human brain or a crime scene.

I know that the whole 1:1 initiative and iPad thing is new and in years following the program will continue to grow and progress in ways I can’t imagine. I can’t wait to hear about them!

Thank you, Ashley. Join us to see Ashley and a variety of Mendon-Upton students and teachers present at the Community iFair - Thursday, 3/26, from 5:45pm - 8pm at Nipmuc!

Student Feature Friday - Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards

This week I am excited to feature some of our outstanding student artists and their recognition by The Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. If you've had the chance to view the art displayed in our lobby and hallways, then you know Nipmuc has a proud tradition of excellence in the arts. I'm excited to feature these students and their impressive work. Congratulations Kristen, Kyle, Justin, Stephanie, and Somaiya!

"My Brother" by Kristen Denson
Kristen Denson
Q: What types of art do you most like to create?
A: I love to work with three dimensional mediums to make all sorts of sculptures. Recently I have created an abstracted piece out of Plaster of Paris, a piece inspired by Louise Nevelson, and a crown entirely out of shells. I also love painting using acrylic paint and have recently been using the impasto technique, which I really enjoy.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of art?
A:  My favorite piece of my own art is a batik of two elephants that I made my sophomore year. I like this piece the best because I had a lot of fun making it.

Q:  Tell us about the piece that received the award.
A:  The piece that received the award is the 3 faces project that I was assigned for AP Art. The subject of the piece is my 10 year old brother Sam, and I drew him in colored pencil making three different expressions. I abstracted the color scheme which is my favorite part because I think that it makes it more interesting and unexpected.

"Nuclear Shark" by Kyle Jankauskas
Kyle Jankauskas
Q: What types of art do you most like to create?
A:  I enjoy drawing from observation and creating a realistic look to what I am trying to perceive.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of art?
A: My favorite piece of art was my monochromatic from junior year, because it highlighted the different values or shades a color can hold.

Q:  Tell us about the piece that received the award.
A:  It is called a transformation, made with both regular and colored pencils. The piece was just the first idea that I came up with when I was told about the project. It took me a few classes to draw the figure and color it in full.

"Tiger" by Justin Phipps
Justin Phipps
Q: What types of art do you most like to create?
A:  The types of art I most like to create are graphite and/or colored pencil drawings.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of art?
A:  My favorite piece of art I own currently is an acrylic painting of a hummingbird I did last year. It is my favorite because that piece was the first time I worked with acrylics and I was not expecting the final product to come out as well as it did.

Q:  Tell us about the piece that received the award.
A:  The piece I received the award for was a tiger batik, that took approximately 24 hours. The part I most liked about the project is the process; at times it may have felt tedious but really was a great exercise in patience.

"View from the Third Floor" by Stephanie Poly
Stephanie Poly
Q: What types of art do you most like to create?
A:  As I continue to work with different mediums, I fall in love with new ways to make art. Recently I worked with Conté crayon for the first time to draw the human figure and found that I deeply enjoyed the entire process and the end product. Currently, however, I am getting back into painting which I must say is my favorite and most relaxing pastime.

Q:  What is your favorite piece of art?
A: My favorite piece of artwork thus far has to be the painting I created last year which was inspired by the style of Franz Marc. I have always loved painting but until last year I had never skewed from realism. The Franz Marc painting had me working with abstract colors and shapes for the first time. It was something new I had tried and loved.

Q:  Tell us about the piece that received the award.
A:  The piece I submitted was an 18x24 inch architectural pencil drawing looking down from the third floor of the school, through the window. The piece was very detailed and tedious to create but nevertheless I stuck with it. I am not entirely sure how long the piece took me to complete, I only know that when I started it there were leaves on the trees and by the end of its completion the leaves had fallen off. I dedicated a lot of my time to the drawing and am very pleased with the results.

"We're Not All Superman" by Somaiya Rowland
Somayia Rowland
Q: What types of art do you most like to create?
A:  I love to create art that makes you think. I want my art to evoke feelings and emotions in the viewer, or to simply awe them. I mostly draw, but I also sculpt, paint, collage, and do digital art. It’s important to have a variety of skills as an artist and to build a powerful portfolio.

Q:  Tell us about the piece that received the award.
A:  The piece I created was called "We're Not All Superman." I wanted to use the iconic superhero pose, a man holding his shirt open, and replace the insignia with the human body. I chose to take away the skin and leave only bones and organs to show that all people, superman or not, are the same inside. I wanted the piece to make people think, and allow them to find their own meaning in it, so I left it slightly ambiguous.
