Lecture Opportunity: "Concussions - Getting Your Bell Rung: What Parents Should Know"

A lecture "Concussions - Getting your Bell Rung:  What Parents Should Know" will be held at the Milford Regional Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine at Franklin, 2 Forge Parkway, Franklin, MA on Thursday, 12/5, at 7 p.m.  The lecture details:

Over the last few years, a new-found awareness of the seriousness and long-term effects of concussions has become a hot topic in the athletic world.  This awareness has caused major changes to the ways in which athletes participate in sports.  Despite rule changes to help decrease the number of head injuries and computer programs to help aid medical personnel with return to place decisions, it's important for parents to have the appropriate and up-to-date information.

Welcome to the Class of 2018!

It was a pleasure meeting the Class of 2018 and their parents during our informational presentations yesterday at Nipmuc. We greeted the students in the morning with the full fanfare of the Nipmuc band, sharing our excitement to welcome them to our school. In the morning presentation we provided students with tours of the building, the chance to participate in a question & answer session, and the opportunity to learn more about the school from Mrs. Moran, Senior Class President Emily Wojtowicz, Freshman Class President Annabelle Hentz, and me. In addition to learning about the school from our 25 student tour guides, one of the highlights of the morning came when Mr. Morel and Mrs. Tremblay invited the eighth grade musicians to join our high school band and chorus students. It was great to see our freshmen-to-be performing next to our seniors. All of the students were excited by this opportunity and the chance to welcome students to our school in such a fun way.

In the evening we invited parents and students back to Nipmuc to learn more about the strength of our academic programming, the vibrancy of student life, and the many opportunities available to our students. In discussing the school we were able to highlight some of our programs including the real-world learning that takes place in DECA (business/marketing) courses, the internship/job shadow experience provided by the Nipmuc STEM Scholars Program, the accomplishments of our award winning art program, and tremendous growth in enrollment and achievement of our Advanced Placement courses.

Once again, we were exceptionally fortunate to be joined by Emily Wojtowicz and Annabelle Hentz, as well as more than thirty students who shared their experiences at Nipmuc during the open house portion of the evening.

Included below you will find the presentation that we shared with parents and students last night. Additionally, I have included a copy of the 2013-14 course selection sheet and the Nipmuc Program of Students that offer more information about the courses offered to students at Nipmuc.

Lockdown Safety Drill

Good morning,
Earlier this morning our school practiced a lockdown drill in conjunction with Upton Police Department. I am glad to let you know that the drill was successful.

Our faculty and staff guided students through the procedure which involves making sure all staff members secure and supervise students in a safe location in the building. Our students responded to the drill in a cooperative and serious manner.

Thank you to Chief Bradley, School Resource Officer Carl Ambrosino, and the members of the Upton Police Department who helped us to run this drill today.

Sincerely,
John Clements
